A Taste of Island Life at the New York Botanical Gardens

by Mary Jo Manzanares on April 26th, 2007

Journey to Paradise at New York Botanical GardensIf you missed the Orchid Show at the New York Botanical Garden (it closed Easter Weekend), you need to put this next one on your calendar — Caribbean Gardens: Journey to Paradise, on display April 27 through September 16, 2007.

When I think about the flora of the Caribbean, I think about richly green, lush foliage, brilliantly colored, uniquely shaped blossoms, and a dense, fragrant air. Caribbean Gardens will have all that, and a lot more to appeal to all your senses.

Here’s what you can expect:

Elaborate, color-themed motifs lead to a dramatic centerpiece: a spectacular two-story façade of a columned, Caribbean-style house. Beds overflow with tropical color and greenery, from bromeliads to cycads and caladiums to cannas, transforming the glass house galleries into a tropical paradise.

Discover the colonial influence on the region’s gardening as the tradition and formality of Spanish gardens meet the variety and vividness of Caribbean flora

There are a couple of additional Caribbean themed events going on during that time:

  • Paradise in Print, April 27 to August 19, 2007, will featured rarely seen illustrated works for the Garden’s own LuEsther T. Mertz Library. The illustration tell the story of the Caribbean’s evolution, history, and culture, along with beautiful illustrations of the island flowers.
  • Caribbean Cultural Festival, held every weekend May to September, will showcase aspects of island culture, with food, music and dance programs.
  • Music in May, every weekend in May, will feature the beautiful sounds of the Caribbean from salsa to steel drums. I LOVE the sounds of those steel drums! This is primarily traditional music from the islands. Performances are at noon, 1 and 3 pm.

Admission is $18 for adult, $16 for students (with ID) and seniors, $5 children (ages 2-12), and free for children under two. Admission gets you into the exhibit, the entire garden grounds, the Paradise in Print art display in the library, the Caribbean Cultural Festival events, the tram tour, all other gardens, tours, and events. Tickets can be purchased online, with a small handling fee, onsite. Onsite parking is available for $10.

Hours are Tuesday - Sunday, 10 am 6 pm. The Gardens are closed on Mondays, unless it is a Federal holiday, in which case it is open those same hours.

The New York Botanical Garden is a plant museum located in the Bronx at Bronx River Parkway at Fordham Road.
