Back to Basics: Direct vs. Non-Stop Flights
The two phrases direct and non-stop are used often used interchangeably be travelers looking to make flight reservations. They words do not mean the same thing, and there can be complicated fall out if you don’t realize the difference.
Non-Stop means that the flight will leave your departure airport and get to your arrival airport without any schedule stops. A non-stop flight takes you from point A to point Z without any points in between.
Direct means that the flight will leave your departure airport and make stops prior to getting to your arrival airport, but it is all the same flight number. There is generally no scheduled change of aircraft. (Note that I’m saying “scheduled” change of aircraft. Anytime a plane is on the ground things can change.) A direct flight gets you from point A to point Z with a stop in point B, and sometimes a stop in point C.
If there’s a choice, I always choose a non-stop flight. Every stop that you make is an opportunity for a delay, whether because of weather, mechanical, staffing issues, airport problems, emergencies, etc.
