Back to Basics: Extra Hotel Fees

by Mary Jo Manzanares on April 9th, 2008

Five dollar bill As a general rule of thumb, upscale hotels and resorts assess extra charges for things like telephone calls, internet access, gym or health club fees, etc.  Generally accepted reasoning within the industry, although not necessarily admitted in public, is that guests staying at these hotels are in an income bracket where they will not challenge or quibble over additional fees.  Alternatively, they are on expense accounts, with all costs being paid by an employer, so there is no need to economize on these extra charges.

Most leisure travelers or small business employees, pay closer attention to these charges for extras and find better value in the mid-range hotels.  At most of these hotels you will find these extra amenities available at no additional charge.  Many travelers choose these mid-range hotels specifically because there are no surprise add-on fees.

If these additional amenities are important to you, and you are watching your budget, make sure you check to see if they are included in your room charge  Avoiding surprise add-on fees, even if you are prepared to pay them, is always a money saving idea.

There are rules for what my college will pay for. So, they won’t pay for many of the add-on fees. That means that if I stay at one of those hotels that adds the fees, I am stuck with them. That is why I always stay at the mid-level hotels, even when on business trips. As you say, many of those extra services are included in the price of the room.

Yeah, I agree — most times the mid-price range offers the best value.
