Back to Basics Travel Tip: Alarm Clocks

by Mary Jo Manzanares on September 25th, 2007

alarm clock When you travel a lot, it’s sometimes easy to forget some of the most basic advice and recommendations.  That happened to me a few weeks back, and it serves as an important reminder to get back to travel basics every once in awhile.  We all forget those simple little tips every once in awhile.

One of my great joys in personal travel is not having to set an alarm.  While I tend to be an early riser naturally, knowing that I have to wake up to a blaring alarm leads to a very fitful sleep.

What’s worse than having to wake up to an alarm?  Being able to sleep in, but having an alarm wake you up anyway!

That’s what might happen if you fail to check the alarm clock in your hotel room!

Back to Basics Tip:  Save yourself from an unscheduled wake up on your next hotel stay, by checking to see that the alarm is turned off.  If the alarm clock has two alarm options, check to make sure they both are turned off.  I usually do this when I first get to the room as part of my settling in process.  I forgot recently.  Won’t make that mistake again!

I ran into the opposite problem a few times recently. I set the alarm clock in the hotel room for when I wanted to get up, and it didn’t go off! Apparently they had disabled the alarm so that it wouldn’t go off and disturb guests who hadn’t checked it before going to bed! Now, I set the alarm feature on my cell phone, and/or ask for a wakeup call.

Half the time, I can’t even figure out how the darn alarm clocks work! I usually set the alarm on my cell phone, and rely on the hotel wake up call as back up.
