New Ways to Call a Cab

Calling a cab just got a little bit easier with 1-800-Cab Ride, a service allowing you to get a quote on a cab ride, schedule the ride, and pay for it, all online.
A visit to check out the website, and to check out what it would cost me to get a cab to pick […]

Golden Gate Bridge 70th Anniverary

The Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, linking the city to Marin County.
I’ve written before about the Golden Gate Bridge, but noticed that today was the 70th anniversary of its opening.

Summer Travel Season is Officially Under Way

The three-day Memorial Weekend holiday kicks off the official summer travel season.
Fuel is high, for both autos and airplanes, so the bargains are a little more scarce this year. Still, the roads are expected to be jams, as are the airports. I always take vacation this time of year, so I’ll get to […]

Go By GoCar

I’ve toured a city by car, bus, train, moped, bicycle, motorcycle, scooter, and on foot.  Each mode of touring offers different options and varying perspectives on a city.
Travelers in San Francisco and San Diego now have an additional choice on how to see the city — a GoCar.  The GoCar is a talking 3-wheeled vehicle […]

Retracing History: The Underground Railroad Bicycle Route

While it wasn’t our finest hour in American history, there’s no denying the existence of our slave era. Some people prefer to let the past lay dormant; others prefer to use it as a reminder in daily life. Adventure Cycling has chosen to honor the bravery of that period of history, and has developed a […]

Where in the World Have You Been?

Where in the World have I been?
Here’s a link to a map which visually lays out the US States and countries of the world that I’ve visited.  I’m not counting the location if I’ve only touched down at the airport to make a connection.  I actually have to have left the airport for it to count.
You’ll […]

Making Faster Car Rental Pick-ups and Returns

In the March 2007 edition of Fast Company magazine, blogging pal Mark Ashley of Upgrade Travel Better wrote a great article about the changing rental car industry.
Mark observes:
Online check-in and on-site kiosks have quickly revolutionized the way we get through airports and hotels.  Renting a car, however, has remained a stubbornly retro experience.
What can be […]

Commuting Can be Eco-Friendly

On a recent layover, as I was sitting in the transportation van with the rest of my crew, I looked out the window at the mass of tail lights and exhaust fumes, shook my head, and muttered “rush hour.”
For those of you who travel to and from the airport on a frequent basis, I’m sure […]

SFO’s Air Train is Now Operating

Traveling through San Francisco International Airport yesterday, I noticed that the Air Train has finally been completed.
I’m not entirely sure when this happened.  I was here a couple of weeks ago, and the “coming soon” sign was still up, so it was a pleasant surprise to find it operating this week.
I arrived at SFO in […]

Not for Tourist Guidebooks

If you visit your local bookstore (retail location or online), you’ll see a healthy selection of travel guidebooks.  If you’re like most people, you’ll browse through all of them, read some reviews about each of the different publishers, and probably buy a couple different ones.  You’ll probably pick one of the “big” names in travel, and then […]
