Driving Away

by Mary Jo Manzanares on April 24th, 2006

lexus.jpgIf your next trip is a drive-away, rather than a flyaway-away, here’s a study that might interest you.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute study discovered some shocking news: Multi-tasking while you are driving increases your risk of being involved in an accident.

Drivers who are also putting on make up, eating, or chatting on the cell phone are three times as likely to be involved in a crash as more attentive drivers. The study further found that almost 80 percent of crashes, and 65 percent of near crashes, happen within three seconds of some form of driver distraction.

Other contributors to crashes or near crashes included: cell phone dialing, drowsiness, poor judgment, driving aggressively, and rubbernecking or otherwise glancing away from the road.

The unsurprising bottom line here is that you should pay attention, and not multi-task when driving. Very good suggestions, indeed. I’m just not sure why we needed a major study to figure that out.

    Exactly!

I hate seeing erring drivers but it annoys me even more when I notice that they drive like the way they do because they are doing something else. They put their lives and other people lives’ at risk for something which could be done later.
