Fly Away Cafe - Where travel is a way of life

First Night at Sea

by Mary Jo Manzanares on May 10th, 2006

One thing that I tend to do when on a ship is to eat and drink a little more than usual.

I’m not alone in this regard, as I look around and see people who have had far more to drink than I.  From the moment you board the ship, there is someone asking for your beverage order.  It’s vacation, and I’m all for imbibing, but I’ve never understood the need to be drunk before leaving the harbor.

Once onboard, like any other resort, the cruise line plies you with opportunities to spend money.  From cruise photos and videos to souvenir glasses, spa treatments, art, to all the boutiques aboard.  There are lots of ways to add to your shipboard account.  Some things are good values, others are not.

I usually skip most of these “extras” and after we left San Francisco harbor, I took a book to a spacious bar, grabbed a couch by the window, ordered a drink, and settled in to watch the world go by.

Dinner was at the Steakhouse, considered a premium dining upgrade (a $15/person surcharge applies).  This premium option seems to have become standard over the last few years.  On this cruise, I didn’t think the premium option added much value.  The Steakhouse was located and operated out of the area where the lunch and breakfast buffet is offered.  While the views were spectacular from the top deck of the ship, the food and service weren’t anything special.

After dinner I hit the casino for about an hour, met a few of my fellow travelers, and won a few paltry sheckels at blackjack.

Then it was off to bed, where some rougher than typical seas lulled me to sleep.
