Flight Attendant Friday: Height & Weight

by Mary Jo Manzanares on April 25th, 2008

Flight Attendant Friday Q.  Are there height and weight restrictions for getting hired as a Flight Attendant?

A.  At one time there were very strict height and weight requirements for the job.  Of course, there were also restrictions about age, gender, and marital status, too.

Those days are gone.  Primarily because of law suits, and court rulings that held those restrictions were discriminatory and had not bona fide relationship to performing the safety functions of the job.

To get hired today, you probably need to meet a height and weight proportionate standard.  And while I can’t give exact numbers, it’s probable that we all know what it is when we see it.

When my Mom was a flight attendant for Northwest (specifically Northwest Orient), she was supposed to be forced to quit on the eve of her 32nd birthday (or when she got married).. in the beginning, she even had to go show her *male* boss her girdle before boarding a flight!! Can you believe that? Anyway, even with the strict rules about height, weight, appearance, hair (I think I remember that she wasn’t allowed to have hair that touched her collar), marital status, etc, they had a ton of fun. Time has brought equality, but it has also brought a ton more rules.. I’ve heard her say before that she wouldn’t want to work in this day and age. Back then, flight attendants were really hip. ;)

Fortunately she was a part of a lawsuit that changed her contract, and she wasn’t forced to quit when she married my Dad or when she turned 32. Wow, how times have changed, eh? If she was still working at NWA, she would have serious seniority, I think her employee number would be lower than 300.

Times have definitely changed, and I’m glad tha days of all those restrictions are a thing of the past.

While new safety regulations have changed the job a lot since your mom was flying, we still have fun!
