Flyaway Cafe to Start "Ask a Flight Attendant"

by Mary Jo Manzanares on January 9th, 2008

IAG interview with Flyaway Cafe As many of you readers know, I work as a Flight Attendant for a major U.S. airline.  While I don’t reveal the specific airline that I work for, and I refrain from commenting on most airline politics and news, I get lots of email from people wanting to know more about the industry, the job and lifestyle, and about specifics of my job.

While I try to cover a lot of these details on a day to day basis (my blogging is primarily based on personal experience), it appears that readers want to know more about the job — sort of the good, the bad and the ugly of being a Flight Attendant.

In response to these questions, and as a way to share a glimpse of my work life with you, I’m going to start a new feature here at Flyaway Cafe called “Ask a Flight Attendant.”  How often I run the feature will depend totally on you — that is, how many and how often I get questions.

So here’s your chance to ask the questions that you want answered, either by leaving your questions in the comments, or by emailing me directly.  As soon as I get a nice assortment of questions, I’ll get them answered and published here.

What do you want to know?

    Hi Mary Jo,

I have a question. There was a story this morning about a flight making an unscheduled stop in Calgary due to turbulence. You can see it here: http://www.gogirlfriend.com/travel-news/air-canada-jet-makes-emergency-landing-passengers-injured-4910

My question is this. If you aren’t hurt during something like this, but the flight is still interrupted, what is the airline’s responsibility for you making your connections? I’m thinking what you may have booked at your destination - hotels, concerts, rental cars?

I’m also curious if you’ve ever experienced anything like this.

Okay, that was 2 questions - sorry!

Awesome. I checked it out and really dug the film. Crazy trip.

This is going to be such a great feature!

I’d like to know how flexible the work hours are. For instance if someone has a family could they work on a really part time basis or maybe only domestic flights so that they’re not flying overseas and away for several days?

    Keep the questions coming!

I’ve had a lot by email, too, so I should be able to start the series in a few more weeks.

Where do flight attendants go right before the flight to get informed about stuff. I have searched the internet but haven’t found anything. And where do they go after?
