Gifts for Travelers: The Big One

by Mary Jo Manzanares on December 24th, 2007

Palm trees nearing dusk If you still haven’t gotten a gift for the traveler in your life, you are seriously down to the final hours.

I’ve given you lots of good suggestions over the month, but if you still haven’t found anything that grabbed your attention, I’d hazard a guess it’s because the traveler on your list is one of the most important people in your life.  And that person is always hard to buy for, no matter how many ideas we come up with.

So, here are a few grand gestures that are sure to delight that traveler who is a VIP in your life.

  • The International Trip:  In a gift basket, place a destination guide book (it doesn’t mater which guidebook, it’s about the destination!), a food item associated with the country, a calendar with the dates of the trip blocked out, and other assorted odds of ends that represent the country to which you’ll be traveling.  For example, for a trip to Italy, you could include a Guidebook for Rome, an Italian phrase book, some olive oil, a little Italian flag, a toy airplane, and a calendar with May 1-10 highlighted.
  • The Girls Trip:  Assemble some bath products (it doesn’t matter what kind, it’s all about the destination), pajamas, a book of chick lit (ask at the book store, they’ll point you in the right direction), and a calendar with a weekend blocked out.  For example, for a spa weekend, you could include a body scrub, some comfy, soft cotton pajamas, a yoga mat, and a calendar with a weekend for the visit marked off.  Go really over the top by including two small dolls, making it a weekend trip for her and her BFF (best friend forever).
  • The Guys Trip:  Combine tickets for an event with items representing the event.  For example, for a sports fan you could include a basketball, a pair of gym shorts, a toy team mascot, and a copy of the season’s schedule with the “big” game circled.
  • The Luxury Weekend:  Pick up a brochure of a hotel, and combine it with some bubbly, some music, candy and other personal and sentimental items.  For example, the hotel should be the best in your town (or nearby town), five star, no scrimping allowed.  Add to it a CD of romantic music, a bottle of champagne, some bubble bath, a small box of the very best chocolate you can find, a faux million dollar bill, and again, a calendar with the weekend blocked out.
  • The “We Have Big Dreams, But a Small Budget” Trip:  It’s about the journey as much as the trip, so make the planning stage part of the gift.  In a gift bag include a copy of a travel magazine (consider a one year subscription), a piggy bank or savings account deposit titled “Vacation,” a calendar with photos from your dream destination, and a map.  You may not be able to commit to a date to travel, but you can commit to planning your trip right away.

All of these gifts require some time and effort today to get them ready, but the big time suck of making reservations, getting tickets, etc., can wait till the holiday craziness has passed.  For this gift to succeed, without making you look like the last minute kid, there are two important things to remember:  make it intimate, and put the date(s) on a calendar.  Scheduling the trip, even if you have to change it later, shows that you intend to make it happen.

Now repeat after me, I won’t ever wait till the last minute again!
