How do you Celebrate Boxing Day?

by Mary Jo Manzanares on December 26th, 2007

Here is the US, Boxing Day isn’t a holiday as it is in the U.K., Canada, New Zealand, Australia, and perhaps other places as well.

The origins of Boxing Day appear to in dispute, and perhaps the source of many an urban legend, but is celebrated on December 26th, the day after Christmas.

Since I’m all for celebrating holidays of whatever type, I’d love to hear about Boxing Day celebrations.

Do you celebrate it?  And if so, how?

Boxing day for me involved crazy shopping much like the day after Thanksgiving here (Black Friday?). All the stores have sales and open their doors early. I remember one year I went two hours early and stood in line in the freezing rain to get a good deal on a memory stick. It was insane. People screaming running around to get the deals. And people camp out the night before with tents and stuff when there are big deals. It’s an experience!

Not sure that’s how I’d prefer to spend the day after Christmas. And even though I enjoy a day shopping, I’ve never understood the frenzied lines for these sales.

I’ve spent it the shopping way before, (in Canada), and one year in England I tried to show my relatives how to do boxing day shopping - only half the stores were open and we had to try again the next day. This year I spent it with my fiance, we’d spent christmas apart, and this was our christmas day. My favourite boxing day since childhood - when we used to spend it at the zoo!
