Let Your Stomach be Your Travel Guide with Southern Food Maps

by Mary Jo Manzanares on July 8th, 2007

gumbo If you’re looking for a food and travel experience, you may need to look no further than the Southern Foodways Alliance’s food maps.  The organization, headquartered in Mississippi, is dedicated to preserving the great food history of the southern United States.

What do you think of when you hear the phrase “southern food?”  Think about visions of barbecue, gumbo, tamales, fried chicken, and grits!  The variety of southern food speaks to the equal diverse history and spirit of south.

tamales Thanks to the SFA you can chart a “food trail” for your vacation, going from location to location tasting all sorts of wonderful southern food.  Here’s a Tamale Trail in the Mississippi Delta.  Or a Southern Barbecue Trail.  Or a Gumbo Trail in Louisiana (although I have a favorite gumbo spot in another location!).  The maps are interactive, just point and click, and you’ll find information about specific restaurants, including links to their websites when available.

If you’re a traveler who enjoys being led around by his/her stomach, you can’t go wrong with these maps.  Mmmmmmm, now I’m hungry!

So where’s this gumbo place you mention? I’”m always looking for more great places for gumbo.

Just a little place that I discovered and used to enjoy. They even packaged a nice to-go container. Haven’t had it for quite awhile, but I can still taste it!

This is a great find. Thanks so much for bringing it to our attention.

Speaking of great food - I just returned from a trip to Cape Cod and Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts. The seafood is fantastic, and so is the homemade ice cream available just about everywhere.

    I can’t wait to return.

Oooooh, the seafood is yummy in that corner of the world. I recently returned from Boston, where I managed to have lobster for as many meals as possible. I love a good lobster roll!

What, no places in Lafayette? lol I gotta say, the picture you chose for the gumbo is way weird. XD It looks more like rice and gravy than gumbo. So many people over most of the US think that’s how gumbo is served, but it should be somewhat soupy, I would estimate one and a half parts gumbo to one part rice at driest. Maybe even two parts gumbo to one part rice.

Hi Jeanne - and thanks for the comment.

I LOVE gumbo! And my experience also has been that it’s more soup-like than casserole like.
