Manhattan: Intrepid Air & Space Museum Closing Soon
Another guest post from pal Jeffrey Whelan —
September is your last chance to visit the Intrepid Air and Space Museum on Manhattan’s West Side until May 2008. The venerable WWII aircraft carrier Intrepid, which has been moored at Pier 86 on the Hudson River, is being moved for renovations after 25 years of hosting a whole history of military aircraft, not to mention legions of school visitors and tourists.
The Intrepid Air and Space Museum has also included the de-commissioned nuclear submarine Growler (the only one open to the public) and a retired Concorde supersonic commercial jet. The “Space” part comes from the Intrepid’s role in picking up astronauts from splash landings in the 60’s (yes, a space capsule is on display).
Museum Hours are Monday through Friday 10 am-5 pm, Saturday and Sunday, 10 am-6 pm. During the final week, the museum will stay open for one additional hour each day.
Admission: Adult, $16.50; Veterans, Reservists, Seniors and College Students, $12.50; Children 6-17, $11.50; Children 2-5, $4.50; Children under 2, Free. Admission for those in a wheelchair is half priced, as all exhibits (Growler and Concorde) are not accessible. Active and retired (20-plus years) military are admitted free.
Manhattanite tip (straight from a city cop): to calculate the cross street for West Side pier numbers, simply subtract 40. Therefore, the Intrepid is at 46th street on the Hudson River.
The Intrepid Air & Space Museum closes October 1st, and returns in time for Fleet Week (Memorial Day) 2008. In the meantime, the museum will keep busy with off-site educational work.
