Matchbook Monday: Aladdin Hotel & Casino
Today’s Matchbook Monday is an oldie, but goodie, from the former Aladdin Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The Aladdin opened in 1966, with a Arabic theme, and gained fame as the location of Elvis and Priscilla Presley’s wedding. Although remodeled and refurbished over the years, and passing through the hands of numerous owners, the Aladdin it remained largely intact until its implosion in 1997. The implosion left only the Theater standing, and an entirely new Aladdin was built.
The Aladdin reopened in 2000, but not without a good deal of trouble: fire safety testing, surveillance issues, and striking Culinary workers. It is from this time period that this matchbook was picked up.
Although the Desert Passage mall, with its blend of modern stores and middle eastern themes was popular, the resort and casino was in trouble nearly from the beginning. I have to wonder if the post-911 world is just not ready for a Baghdad in the Las Vegas Desert.
In 2003, the property was sold again, and it reopened in 2007 as Planet Hollywood. The Desert Passage mall has been converted to Miracle Mile Shops, and the casino and resort have gone through additional renovations.
Planet Hollywood is located at 3667 Las Vegas Boulevard, South Las Vegas.
