Matchbook Monday: Grand Bay Hotel, Isla Navidad

by Mary Jo Manzanares on February 11th, 2008

Grand Bay Hotel - Isla Navidad If you enjoy a nice beach resort, you’ll enjoy today’s Matchbook Monday - the Grand Bay Hotel at Isla Navidad Resort in Manzanillo, Mexico.

I came across this matchbook while doing a little cleaning around the house, and it reminded be (quite fondly) of my stay there a few years ago.

The hotel is on a private island about 35 miles from the Manzanillo airport.  The drive there takes you through lush forests and vegetation - a very green part of the country.

This is a AAA four diamond hotel, and is beautiful both in its spacious rooms and in its location.  Room views are either of the marina, the private lagoon, or the Pacific Ocean.  I would spend most mornings having coffee on the balcony, and end the day there with a nightcap before turning in for bed.

A water taxi is available from the marina to take you to the neighboring town of Barra Navidad.  It’s about a 3 minute ride, costs about $2 round trip, and operates regularly.

This is a wonderful luxury hotel, and thinking about it reminds me that it’s time to pay a visit once again. . . and provide you with a proper (current) review.

Do you have matchbooks lying around the house, collected in a jar, or in the bottom of a drawer?  Please share them with our readers.  Take a photo and email it to me for inclusion in a future Matchbook Monday.  Please put “matchbook Monday” in the subject line.

I am going to Grand Bay hotel in Manzanillo in December. I have never been to Mexico at all and am looking forward to my vacation. Any suggestions about what I should do there? I am going on my long awaited honeymoon. This is the first chance we have had and we have been married for 5 years.

Without knowing exactly the kind of activities that you enjoy, it’s hard to make any specific recommendations.

I enjoyed the slower pace of it all. Being away from the busy activities of Mexico was a nice change of pace. You can sleep in or get up early and watch the sunrise over the marina. Go for walks on the beach or choose a lounge chair.

When I was there the resort had a movie theater, but I’m not sure if it’s still in operation.

On days that I wanted a little more activity, I’d wander over to Barra Navidad. They have a little beach for surfing and another that’s great for just walking, sunning, and or swimming. There are some interesting shops and architecture to explore.

Restaurants are much cheaper on Barra as well (although I’m certain the prices are higher than when I was last there).

In short, I’d just enjoy a relaxing vacation, away from the hubbub of a city, wander, lie, and explore.

Hope you haev a wonderful, if delayed, honeymoon!
