Moleskines: My Traveling Diary

by Mary Jo Manzanares on April 30th, 2006

moleskine.jpgI’ve recently re-discovered Moleskines.  Those lovely black leather bound books, with pages of heavy cream paper, an expandable inside pocket, a silk bookmark, all bound up with an elastic closure.

For a writer, merely holding one of these gems in your hand is sheer delight.  Since I’m doing some writing again, I went out and purchased a couple of these for my travels.

Now that I have them, it almost seems a shame to write in them.  But I will.

If you’re already a Moleskine fan, you may want to check out the Wandering Moleskine Project II.  In this project, several Moleskine notebooks will be sent on their way from various points around the world.  Each person who receives the notebook will be responsible to fill out a page, before mailing it on to the next person on the list.  Scans of the pages will be posted online as they are filled.

Similar types of projects existed pre-9/11 with items traveling around the world and then being handed off to another participant.  In today’s security conscious world, this is the current incarnation of those types of projects.

If you can’t travel the world yourself right now, you may want to sign up for the wandering Moleskine project.  At least your designs, words, and/or art can go where you can’t.

2 opinions for Moleskines: My Traveling Diary

I _adore_ journals and diaries. I have several of them which are pristine and new; and several more that have been written in a handful of times each. I would appear to have a habit of acquisition and not usage. :)

I’m firmly resisting the call of a Moleskine, telling myself that I really ought to use that money for some over-dyed floss or specialty linen. So far that line of reasoning is working… but I haven’t tested my limits by physically encountering Moleskines in the Wild, so it may be working merely by lack of proximity and not one of willpower.

I can actualy relate to buying, but not using, a notebook. I’ve done it so many times before — it just seems to messy to actually put pen to paper when it is really nice, pretty paper.

But I did use the Moleskines before, so I bought a couple and fully intend to use these. So far, however. . . it’s been tough.
