Money Saving Travel Tips for Monday (The Tuesday Edition)

by Mary Jo Manzanares on October 31st, 2006

money1.jpgI had these money saving travel tips ready to post yesterday (Monday), but then got sidetracked and forgot to actually do it.

So, rather than skip a week, here is “Money Saving Travel Tips for Monday ““ The Tuesday Edition.”  (The concept has been work for Monday Night Football for awhile, so it’ll work here.)

  • Take part in “Restaurant Week,” usually a citywide promotion featuring a three course prix-fixe menu.  Restaurant is available in many cities across the country (Manhattan, Washington DC, Boston, for example), and frequently runs longer than a week.  In Seattle, November is Twenty-Five for $25, with 25 of Seattle’s top restaurants offering their specialties in a prix-fixe menu.  A full listing of restaurants, menus, and details can be found here.
  • Try an all-inclusive resort.  You’ll need to check out exactly what is and isn’t include in the price, and then you’ll know what your vacation will cost.  Some resorts specialize in certain types of activities, so look around to see if there’s one that meets your needs.  There are some downsides to this choice (meals at the same place every day, paying for things if you leave the resort, some activities not included), but if you do your research and fine a resort that’s just right for you, you can save some money.  You’ll also know the cost of your vacation before your travel, and if you can avoid the temptation to purchase expensive add-ons, there’s no reason to go over budget.
  • Join AAA.  They have more than just roadside assistance, although I used that feature one night returning home from a black tie function, and felt that feature alone was worth the price of membership.  AAA also provides maps and travel guide books.  I’ve never paid for either of these items, although that may vary dependent on location and your membership plan.  Membership also entitles you to discounts at hotels (important to mention AAA membership when shopping around for the best rate), tours, cruises, and admission rates at many attractions around the country.  Membership costs vary, depending on options.
