Music From the Summer of Love

by Mary Jo Manzanares on July 13th, 2007

In a Gadda da Vida I was thinking about the Summer of Love, and some of the great music that came out of that era.

Just browsing the list of music that the Whitney has put together to accompany the Summer of Love exhibit, finds these classics from the 1967-psychedelic era:

The Beatles:  “All You Need is Love” from Magical Mystery Tour (1967), Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds from Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967), and “Revolution No. 9″ from “The Beatles” (The White Album).

Eric Burdon & the Animals:  “San Franciscan Nights” was also part of the soundtrack to the movie “Easy Rider.”

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young:  “OHIO” was one of the anthems of the anti-war movement.

The Doors:  “Break on Through (to the Other Side).”

Bob Dylan:  “Mr. Tambourine Man.”

Jimi Hendrix:  “Are You Experienced” and “Foxy Lady,” but who could forget his rendition of the National Anthem at Woodstock.

Iron Butterfly:  “In a Gadda da Vida” was done in a short and long versions.  I remember this album cover!

Jefferson Airplane:  Gracie Slick belted them out with “White Rabbit” and “Won’t You Try Saturday Afternoon,” long before the group became Jefferson Starship, and then just Starship.

Janis Joplin:  “Mercedes Benz” and “Raise Your Hand.”

Rolling Stones:  “Street Fighting Man” and “Wild Horses.”

Just about the time I was lost in these memories (and there’s lots more music on the tour), b5media announces the launch of our new Music Channel, with 21 music blogs.

If you’d like the psychedelic music, be sure to check out Jennifer’s Hippie Sounds.  It will be right up your alley.  And the blog colors are even the bold (dare I say garish?) colors from that era as well!  (Of course, there’s lots of other music genres represented, so be sure to check out the entire channel.)

Ahhhhh, memories!

OK, I was there, in a matter of speaking. As you may have heard it said — “If you remember The Sixties, you weren’t really there.”
But seriously, I recall going to the Monterey Pop Festival the day after my high school graduation in Long Beach, Cal, and staying all three days there in a foggy haze (I don’t mean the weather). I met a 3-man group I had never heard of until I got back to Long Beach and discovered the name of the band I met was the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Talk about a memorable time!

How did I miss this post? From a week ago… (I like to make a grand entrance I suppose). I agree the colors are a bit ‘garish’ — oddly more mellow now than before the launch though :)
Thanks so much for the link love!

AND E.D, in case you come back - that is one very cool memory!
