Fly Away Cafe - Where travel is a way of life

New York Sundays

by Mary Jo Manzanares on October 18th, 2007

Manhattan skyline New York City is one of my favorite places to escape for a little getaway, whether alone, with girlfriends, or for a little romance.

There’s lots to see and do, but let’s face it — it is one expensive city!  A decent martini can set you back $20, a good meal can easily run $100 per person with no extras, and a “reasonable” hotel room is in the $300/night range.

I like a splurge every now and again (okay, I LOVE the occasional splurge), but those prices are out of the question on an regular basis.  My NYC visits have been sharply curtailed by fiscal practicality.

A new NYC promotion has made a Sunday night hotel stay just a little bit more affordable with City Sunday, a discount program with many hotel offering discount rates and special value-added amenities.  Most room discounts are in the 20-30% range, usually off the best available rate, rather than the often inflated rack rate.  The discount often comes with room upgrades, discounted dining, and complimentary breakfasts thrown in as well.

Of course, some restrictions apply, so read the fine print before making your reservations.  Overall, though, this looks like a fairly decent discount plan.

If you have great information to share about NYC, consider applying for a blogging position with b5media.  We’re looking for a someone who lives and/or works in the city to fill a current opening.  If interested, submit your application online, or email me if you have questions about the position.

Came across this blog by accident, and your tip about having a more affordable experience in the Big Apple is indispensable. I live in Chicago, but adore NYC and visit often, so thanks! I really like this blog too. I’m a newbie writing on a similar theme at savvytourist.blogspot.com. Will continue to check this one out!

Thanks for taking the time to read and comment, Monica.

Yes, NYC is an expensive city — part of the reason why it’s so valuable to discover tips to save a little here and there.

I hope you’ll stop back by again!

NYC is a terrific city to blog about, anyone who live in the area would have a great opportunity to create an income stream blogging about things to do in the city, sites and sights to see, etc… GAH! I wish I lived in NYC for this opportunity.

I wish you were in NYC, too, Mark.

It’s a great city, and I know I’ll find an equally great blogger up to the task of sharing it with all of us.
