Pizza and a Beer
I was out walking around Chicago with a friend this afternoon, and we decided to grab a late lunch. We stopped into an upscale urban market to browse for something to pick up and take back to the room.
There was a nice looking pizza bar, so I selected a piece of my favorite pie, and then walked over to select a beverage.
I decided that a cold beer would go great with that slice of pizza, so I mosey over and selected a bottle of one of my favorite beers. At this point I ran into one of those little differences that you discover when you travel.
In Seattle, where I live, if I want to buy one bottle of beer, I can. In Chicago (at least at this store), I could only buy a 6-pack. I was totally shocked! It never occurred to me that you couldn’t buy just one bottle of beer.
The explanation given by the checker was that system would ring up the 6-pack price. Surely there must be a way to deal with this! C’mon, if they can figure it out in Seattle, they can figure it out anywhere.
As a traveler, I may not want an entire 6-pack, but is Seattle the exception on this policy, or the rule? Can you buy just one bottle of beer where you live?

From my experience, it depends on the brand and size of the beer, but more often than not, a single-bottle purchase is NOT an option. I think there are a few places on the south side of the city that sell them singly, but it’s more profitable for distributors to sell them in packs.

I mentioned this to friends when I got home, and they all thought it was strange. I think it’s just one of those regional differences. For us here in the Seattle area, the thought of not being able to buy “just one” is odd.
