Real Snakes on Real Planes

by Mary Jo Manzanares on August 22nd, 2006

adder-snake.jpgYou know, you really can take snakes on a plane.

How you take them on the plane depends in large part upon what kinds of snakes they are.

All types of snakes need to be wrapped in a sack, and then placed inside a sturdy container.  The container itself will need to be labeled “˜LIVE ANIMALS,” and have ventilation holes to keep the snake alive yet not be so large as to allow it to escape.

If the snake is venomous, the container gets an additional warning identifying the snake and explaining that it is poisionous.

How many snakes can be placed in one container depends largely on the type of snake and its size.

Snakes are not permitted as a carry on item in the aircraft cabin, although, yes, your warm and fuzzy puppy and kitten are.

Fees for snake transport vary depending on size of container, distance traveled, and special handling required, so if you want to bring snakes on a plane, check with your airline for exact details and fees.
