Seattle SEAFAIR

by Mary Jo Manzanares on July 18th, 2006

hydros.jpgIf you live in Seattle, or have plans to visit in the next few weeks, you can take advantage of the many SEAFAIR activities going on now through August 6th.

Many of the neighborhoods and communities in the greater Seattle area have festivals, and a full listing of community activities can be found here.

But make no mistake about it.  The heart and soul of SEAFAIR is centered around three events:

The Torchlight Parade:  This year’s parade is Saturday, June 29th, starting at 7:30 pm.  The parade starts at the Seattle Center and proceeds south down Fourth Avenue to Second Avenue, and then King Street.  You can watch curbside, or purchase grandstand seating online.

The Chevrolet Cup Unlimited Hydroplane Race on Lake Washington:  Qualifying starts August 4th, will the big race on August 6th.  Watch these race boats reach speeds of nearly 200 mph, on a course only 2 ½ miles long.  You can watch from your boat (reserved space available), from the shore, or in the comfort on your home.  Hydroplane racing has a long and distinguished relationship with the city of Seattle.  Fireworks will follow the racing events.

blueangels.jpgThe KeyBank Air Show:  No matter what sponsor name is attached to the air show, those of us who live in Seattle just refer to it as the Blue Angels.  A couple days of practice, and then the full show, staged during a break in the hydro races, and these guys make it so easy!  I try to get down to the lake during one of the practice days as it is much less crowded.  I spend most of my days around airplanes, and while the novelty of flight has definitely worn off, the thrill and daring of the Blue Angels still send chills up and down my spine.

SEAFAIR is the largest community festival in the Pacific Northwest, and one of the top the festivals in the United States.  I’ve lived here all my life, and need to stop taking all the entertainment choices for granted.
