Slurp Up a Tuba!
I discovered a drink called “tuba” that I haven’t been able to find anywhere else. At first I was a little hesitant to give it a try. It’s typically found on the the streets and beaches, not necessarily the best places to give new food a try. But try it I did, and it was quite yummy.
Tuba claims a long-standing history, with roots tracing back to the 16th century in the Philippines, when it was under Spanish rule. Today you’ll find it a staple of the Mexican beach scene, and most populated beach and city areas will have a couple Tuba vendors.
It is a non-alcoholic coconut drink that is popular with both locals and tourists. Although most Tuba is now made from a concentrate, the original recipe called for a distillation of the sap from the coconut palm flowers which was then fermented. Then and now it is served with chipped ice. You may be offered the option of chopped walnuts and apples in the drink — say YES! It is quite refreshing, with an odd assortment of flavors that make for a tasty drink.
Served in plastic beach cups, a medium cup of Tuba will usually cost 10 pesos (about $1) and a large about 15 pesos ($1.50).

hmmm.. i always thought that tuba (or palm wine in English) was alcoholic! Also just wondering about your exchange rate.. $1 = Php10? 1 USD is about 40 PHP now… (btw, found you on http://whatsikat.com)
