Walking the Ruins at Pompeii

I’m still traveling, and wanted to share another photo from the road.  This one is of the ruins at Pompeii.  It was a warm day, and I spent hours wandering the ruins and marveling at this ancient civilization.  There’ll be more about this fascinating place in a later post.

Time to Head Off to Amalfi Coast

Today I’m headed down to the Amalfi Coast, where I’ll be staying for a week.  I plan to spend some time wandering the streets and hills of Sorrento and Positano, going over to Capri, and checking out the ruins of Pompeii.
Let’s hope Mt. Vesuvius won’t be erupting while I’m there –

A Look at the Duomo in Florence

I spent a day in Florence getting just a taste of the Renaissance Art of the region.  This photo is of the Duomo, one of many must-see attractions in the city.  (I’ll have lots more details about various parts of my trip to Italy over the next several months, so be sure to keep [...]

A Sunny Day at the Vatican

I’m bringing you another photo from my trip to Italy, this one of Saint Peter’s Basilica at the Vatican.
I’m in Tuscany now, and hope to share some additional photos from my week here at a farmhouse.

I’ll Soon be Under the Tuscan Sun

After a few days in Rome, I’m off to Tuscany where I’ll be staying at a farmhouse located on a vineyard and olive orchard.  A little agri-tourism, and a relaxing environment, that will serve as a perfect spot for day trips into the charming little towns in the area.
Maybe I’ll fall in love with the [...]

My First View of Rome

Rome has been wonderful so far, and I regret that my time here was so short.  Everywhere you turn there is such a sense of history and wonder.
My first real impression of the city was coming up from the subway (Colosseo stop) and finding this in front of you.  It literally took my [...]

Italy’s Festival of Forgotten Fruit

As I wrote about last month, there’s some pretty great looking fall fruit out there right now.
I’ve been stopping by one of my local farmers markets and picking up pears, apples, peaches, nectarines, and a variety of berries.  Mmmmmmmmm, lots of good eating.
That’s probably why a friend thought to send me information about The Festival [...]

15 Tourist Traps — or Not!

A recent MSN article listed 15 tourist traps that the writer recommended avoiding, claiming they weren’t worth the time and/or money.
I disagree with most of them, believing that they are things you need to do at least once in your life.
Read my reasoning here, compare with MSN writer Jon Douglas here, and then weigh in [...]

Flight Attendant Shopping: Silk Map Scarves

I’ve always thought of maps as a valuable travel companion.  I love the ones that are laminated, so that no matter how many times you unfold or refold, they still are there to get you headed in the right direction.
Silk maps are now enjoying current popularity.  Not a recent invention, silk maps have a long history, [...]
