“The Black Duck:” NYC’s Best Kept Secret

by Mary Jo Manzanares on September 12th, 2006

A guest post from NYC pal Jeffrey Whelan, about a wonderful hideaway that I want to try next time I’m in town.

Walk along 28th street between Park and Lexington, and you’ll never know it’s there.

Friends told me it was by the Park South Hotel, and I still had to ask at the front desk.

I walked thru an opening in the lobby and there it was – a long bar, tables and booths, and an elevated sitting area by the window. The room is cozy and decorated with nautical paintings that presage seafood on the menu.

It was a weekend evening, and a jazz guitarist was playing.

Through an archway to the rear, I could see two couples in secluded booths; the rendezvous area, no doubt.

The food is excellent. Yes, try the duck, but the seafood, like the decor, is New Englandy (the owners are based in Rhode Island), with a few surprise Japanese touches on certain dishes. The drinks are inventive (lobster martini) and the service is friendly and unobtrusive.

The Black Duck is located in the Park South Hotel, 122 East 28th Street, and is open for dinner Monday-Saturday.

Sound delightful. I’m going to have to give it a try.

I do hope they have nice reds! I love my Musigny, Chmabertins and Charlemagnes. I’m a white wine snob, but I hear that there are red wine snobs among us. Well those are my favorite reds.

I don’t drink much California Reds, but last time I was in Napa I did enjoy some very nice bottles. I don’t remember all of them, but I recall Dalle Valle, Peter Michael,Shafer and Bond.

I really think you have a great blog. Keep up the great work!

    A votre santé,
    Max

Hi Max, thanks for taking the time to comment.

There’s nothing like a few wine recommendations to file away for your next restaurant visit (or wine store shopping, for that matter).

I’m a big red drinker myself, but you may have convinced me to give those whites a try.
