Travel Tip: Leave Early

by Mary Jo Manzanares on May 14th, 2006

getting ready early.jpgI’m now home from my vacation, am back flying, and am very nearly rested up.  It’s amazing the rejuvenating effect a little time away can have.

One of the best tips that I can give to someone booked on a cruise is to arrive at your embarkation port as early as possible.  I have always found it preferable to arrive the day before sailing.

Yes, most ships don’t sail until 4 pm, but arriving earlier the same day as sailing doesn’t leave much of a margin of error.  I see it happening on flights all too frequently.  People taking the last flight that gets them where they need to go.  Then there’s a mechanical, or a weather delay, or some other cancellation.  Nerves are shot, tempers flare, and the next thing you know a perfectly enjoyable trip has become an unhappy and high stress situation.

I flew from Seattle to San Francisco for the Dawn Princess sailing.  It’s roughly a two-hour flight, one easily made to get me to the ship for a 4 pm sailing.  Even so, I flew to San Francisco the day before sailing.  This gave me plenty of time to get a good night’s sleep, enjoy some time in San Francisco, and get to the ship at a comfortable and leisurely pace.

I started the vacation in a relaxed mode, happy and smiling.  And that’s always a good thing.
