Tree Lighting at Rockefeller Center

by Mary Jo Manzanares on November 26th, 2006

If you’re in Manhattan this week, you have an opportunity to watch the lighting of the Christmas tree in Rockefeller Center.

Tree Lighting at Rockefeller CenterThe tree is already in place, hidden behind lots of scaffolding, so you can barely even tell that it’s really a tree.  I’ve seen it in this condition, and marvel at the planning and work that goes into decorating the tree.  This photo was taken a couple years ago at this very time of year, so I got to see all the preparation being done for the tree trimming and lighting.

The Swarovski Star is already in place as well.  It is comprised of 25,000 crystals, and measures nine and a half feet in diameter.  Weighing in at 550 pounds, it is the largest star ever to grace the holiday tree.  A replica of the star will be on display in Rockefeller Center you can get an up-close look at its size and craftsmanship.

Now all that’s left is for the unveiling and lighting of the tree, which will happen in ceremonies on November 29th, 7-9 pm.  The program includes appearances by Christina Aguilera, Sting, Bette Midler, Sarah McLachlan, Enya, John Legend, Martina McBride, and Taylor Hick.  The festivities will be broadcast on NBC in a one-hour special for those of us who can’t make it to NYC.

I love wandering around Rockefeller Center at night, braving the cold to get a look at the spectacular tree, fronted by ice skaters.  If that doesn’t get you in the holiday spirit, nothing will!

The tree is illuminated daily from 5:30 am-11:30 pm, the entire day on Christmas Day, and until 9 pm on New Year’s Eve, and will remain on display until January 8th.
