TSA Considering Easing Carry On Bag Security Directive

by Mary Jo Manzanares on August 25th, 2006

USA Today is reporting that the TSA is considering relaxing the ban of liquids as carry on items.

The agency apparently:

“. . . wants to find a way to meet the needs of travelers while keeping them safe from the threat of explosives.”

Apparently, the increase in the amount of bags being checked has resulted in clogging up the lines to check bags, as well as putting a strain on the sytem the airlines have to get bags to and from the aircraft.

In an effort to relieve some of these problems, TSA is considering some modifications to the present regulations which would allow small amounts on certain liquids on board the aircraft.  Changes would likely a boon to business travelers making day trips, or quick overnights, however leisure travelers will likely still need to check bags.

“We have to ask ourselves, is it possible to design a security system that does allow the business traveler, male and female, to routinely do overnight business trips using carry-on?”

Don’t change how you pack yet.  It’s still expected to take several weeks to design appropriate safeguards.
