United 93 Opens Today
I’m trying to decide how I feel about seeing (or not seeing) the movie United 93, opening today in theaters across the country.
I’ve seen other movies about Flight Attendants and airlines, both comedies and dramas. I can laugh at my profession. I can laugh at the craziness of my industry. I can even suspend my disbelief at silly scenarios and plot twists that are inaccurate. After all, it’s a movie (television show, book, whatever) and within the realm of entertainment.
But what about United 93? Is it a drama? Well, it’s likely to be very dramatic.
Is it a documentary? Even though its been made by Paul Greengrass, a documentary filmmaker, this is Hollywood, and most likely some dramatic license has been taken.
How many times can I watch the horrible replay of events from 9/11 before I get numb from over saturation?
Is it too soon for this kind of movie? Do we need a little more time before we are ready to view these events in a big-screen production?
Why haven’t we heard more about the Flight Attendants who were onboard flight 93? We hear lots about the heroics of the pilots and the passengers. Have people forgotten that there were other crewmembers ““ Flight Attendants ““ onboard who lost their lives in the performance of their duties? Will I come to terms with their part in these events by watching this movie?
Is the movie crass commercialism that cashes in on a horrific event? Are the surviving family members really okay with this film portrayal, or is that, too, just a lot of publicity hype?
Clearly, I haven’t resolved the questions and issues in my mind, and so can’t decide about whether to go to the movie or not.
I guess I’m just going to need a little more time.
Are you going to see the movie?
