Wandering the Magnificent Mile in Chicago

by Mary Jo Manzanares on July 28th, 2007

Along Michigan Avenue in Chicago What’s a girl to do with a little free time in Chicago?  Wander the Magnificent Mile, of course!

The Magnificent Mile is a shopper’s paradise, located along a section of North Michigan Avenues.  You’ll with upscale specialty stores (Tiffany’s, Burberry, Armani, Hermes), some major department stores (Sak’s - my personal favorite, Nordstrom, Bloomingdale’s, Neiman Marcus), restaurants, and hotels.  There are also residential and commercial buildings, many of which are a recognizable part of the Chicago skyline.

Nordstrom on Magnificent Mile A shopper can spend hours and hours of retail therapy time walking and browsing along Michigan Avenue.  While I have some favorite stores (Sak’s, for one), I’d recommending just walking around and getting the lay of the land first.  It can be a bit of sensory overload, but just put one foot in front of the other, and start walking, covering the territory between the Chicago Bridge and the Water Tower.  (More on those landmarks in future posts.)

If you don’t dawdle too much, your initial foray along the Magnificent Mile should take an hour or two.  Make a note of the stores that call to you, and visit them after you’ve seen everything that’s there.  Better yet, just soak in all the ambiance on your first visit, and come back to do your shopping later in your trip!
