Washington DC: Museum of African Art
The Museum of African Art, a part of the Smithsonian Institute, is primarily devoted to collections from sub-Saharan Africa.
It is a small museum, and on a recent visit, was easily viewed in under an hour. The collections include a variety of textiles, furniture, masks and other tribal regalia.
My two favorite exhibits were:
African Gold: A collection of 19th and 20th century artifacts and tribal regalia from Ghana and Cote d’Ivorie, and is on loan from the Museum of Fine Art in Houston. The exhibit runs through November 26th.
First Look: The Walt Disney-Tishman African Art Collection: One of the world’s finest collections of African art, encompassing most of the major styles. The exhibit runs through December 3rd.
The museum is located at 950 Independence Avenue SW, and is open daily from 10 am to 5:30 pm. It is accessible by Metro’s Blue or Orange line (Smithsonian stop). There is no admission charge.
