Washington DC: Sculpture Gardens
After you’ve browsed the Dada exhibit, allow yourself an additional hour to hour and a half and enjoy the additional art and architecture of the National Gallery’s East Wing, and then a stroll through the Sculpture Garden.
The mobile hanging in the lobby (photo above) harmonizes nicely with the angles of the ceiling and the skylights, and the circles (photo below right) are fun to play around with.
Pieces by a variety of other artists (in photo below) are located at spots throughout the building.
Then, stroll over to the Sculpture Garden, which is located on over six acres between 7th & Constitution Avenue NW. There are six public entrances to the gardens: Constitution & 9th; three on 7th; directly across the West Building; and two on the National Mall between 7th & 9th. The Gardens are wheelchair accessible.
At the center of the Garden is a fountain, which also serves as an ice rink in the winter. There are paved walking paths and lots of seating areas to sit and reflect on the works of art ““ or just rest a little.
You can check out the various plantings and pieces of sculpture, plotting your course by use of a map, or do what we did – stroll around and enjoy the art, sunshine and a little people watching.
The Pavilion Café, which is adjacent to the fountain, offers both indoor and outdoor seating, and is open Monday-Saturday, 10 am to 4 pm, and Sunday 11 am to 5 pm, closing an hour earlier than the gardens themselves.
