Where in the World Should I Go?
I’ve got some vacation time coming next month (the latter part of May), and am trying to decide what to do or where to go.
Here’s the question I’m posing to all my readers — Where should I go?
There are a few parameters that need to be considered:
- I probably will not be able to talk any friends into traveling with me, so it should be somewhere that it would be comfortable for me to be and travel about on my own.
- I’m not into roughing it, but I also don’t need five star accommodations. I like a nice clean, SAFE hotel, conveniently located and fairly priced.
- Depending on the travel time involved, I will probably have a maximum of five days in the location. It would probably be best to pick one destination, rather than planning on a couple.
- A good mix of doing nothing (beach, spa, lounging about) with having lots to do (museums, sightseeing, people watching, good food and beverage) would be perfect. Options are always good.
- It could be foreign or domestic travel. A warm location would be good, but almost every place is warmer than home right now.
- I have a reasonable budget, but expenses cannot be over the top.
I guess that’s about it. I’m not boxed in by a whole lot of requirements, and am willing to consider almost anything. If you have any ideas, email me, or leave a suggestion in the comments.

I think I’m going to Costa Rica, myself. I am in to budget accommodations, so a hostel near the beach and parks it is…
Wherever you go, have a great time!

I’ve been to Costa Rica, and liked it a lot. It was a nice, laid-back pace. Lying on the beach was great — and I also enjoyed a rain forest and cloud forest tour. It was amazing to see creatures in their natural habitat.

I noticed on your list, you’ve never been to North Carolina. How about a trip to the Outer Banks? It’s a great combination of everything you’re looking for: beaches, lounging, sightseeing, and people watching.
Hope this helps!

Depending on how much you want to spend, I highly recommend going to Croatia. Flights daily from Paris with Croatian airlines, or from London with some low-cost airlines.
It definitely fits your description:
- It’s safe to travel alone (for what I’ve done). English is spoken relatively widely and people are friendly…
- Prices are going up, but now is the time to visit before they enter in the European Union. Currency is the Kuna and life is relatively cheap.
- Arf… forgot to read the third point. 5 days is a bit short for a trip like this. :(
- Lots of things to do, museums, walking and the food is great (especially if you like seafood).

Your timing is wonderful, Julien, as I was just talking about Croatia with a friend. I’m of Serbo-Croatian descent, and that area has always had an appeal. I’ve heard so many good things about it lately, and I think that I may need to move it up my travel list.
Although it’s not in the cards for this month, I would like to go there before throngs of tourists invade and the prices go sky high.
I hope you stop by Flyaway Cafe again soon!
